Communication Support Workers (CSWs) are professionals supporting the communication of deaf students at all ages. CSWs support deaf students in many different areas of work and may use a variety of different methods for communication, including British Sign Language (BSL).

CSWs will support students by interpreting lectures or tutorials into BSL for the deaf student. CSWs may be asked to lipspeak for the student (depending on the students requirements) and also takes either handwritten or electronic notes. CSWs may have to brief teachers on deaf awareness to ensure they understand how a CSW works with the deaf student.

Signature offers an NVQ Level 3 for CSWs and recommends that at least a Level 2 qualification in BSL is achieved before registering on the course.

The Association of Communication Support Workers (ASCW) is a national associations that aims to provide support for CSWs.
