To become a teacher of the deaf, teachers must have qualified teacher status (QTS) and have classroom experience before embarking on the training to become a teacher of the deaf. There are several universities that offer training in becoming a qualified teacher of the deaf.
It is wise that the teacher of the deaf have some British Sign Language (BSL) skills as well as a positive attitude towards working with deaf people. The education of deaf children will require a different approach to that of teaching hearing children, therefore an open-minded stance on methods of teaching will also be beneficial.
There are specialised schools for deaf children across the country. Most deaf children will attend mainstream schools, therefore teachers of the deaf are required here too. Teachers of the deaf may also be required in hospitals or health centres, providing education during the early years.
The British Association of Teachers of the Deaf (BATOD) has more information about how to become a teacher of the deaf.
